This happens to people all the time. One option is to get the phone book and call a locksmith. They will charge you starting at $60 and above. Option two is to call the dealers. They can make you a spare key. This is the cheaper option but this assumes you bought the car from the a dealer and that you have somebody to drive you there. Third option is a similar option. If you can get a hold of the key code which the dealer can provide you can go to a locksmith and they will make you a key. I think you may need proof that you won the car or something of that sort.

Another option is to talk to a cop. A lot of times they can open the door for you because they have this tool that they put between the rubber and the glass. Not all cops provide this service though. It all depends of where you live and who you can trust.

Break the glass, if you have coverage. Do the left rear window: it'll be the cheapest to replace, & be least likely to ruin your visibility when you tape the plastic over it until you get it fixed.
Getting a new key made for that car will cost you a bundle, because there's an electronic transponder in it that's unique to your car. It's an anti-theft measure.
That's why you have to go to the dealer with the car's serial number & pay upwards of $80 bucks just to get a key cut.
Add another charge for a mobile call & it could cost more than a new window.

The locks on a Cavalier are almost impossible to reach with a coat hanger, and you could end up bending your doorframe or scratching the crap out of your paint doing it. Call a towtruck that is AAA listed - they have tools to open the door without doing damage to the car. They will charge you a callout fee (roughly 40-50 dollars), so try to arrange with the dispatcher to have the tow truck come to your place when he is already in neighbourhood - you might get a break on the price. And get an extra key cut for the future to save this happening again.

Look in the yellow pages for locksmith, or under tow truck services. It will cost you about $30 and will take them 2 min.. It is an expensive lesson to learn, unfortunatley!
I would have a copy of the door key make and given to a family member or left at home.

Good luck!

That depends on your comprehensive deductible. If it's more than the cost of a locksmith, call a locksmith. If it's not, bust out the glass and call the insurance company. Maybe your next car should have that North Star thing.

If you need access now then call a service who will quote you a price before they roll. Recently I did the same learning the company used a pump forcing the door just enough to flip the lock. Good lesson and best savings for your wallet,do what I did buy a spare key with a magnetic case for the hidden place only for your eyes and security.

if you bought the car from a chevrolet dealer,he has a way to get a new key made, but it will cost you.i believe if you call your local police department, they have a bar they use to unlock car doors.they will probably have you sign a waiver saying if thet damage your car you cant go back on them, but i dont believe there will be any problems.and what other lesson did you learn from this experience? always have an extra set of keys.they have these magnetic key holders you can attach under you car somewhere.good luck!

Coat hanger, or a slim jim.

If you have a manual which shows how the lock works, you could use that to help you find what you need to pull on.

Oh, or you could do what my brother did:

He was driving his (inherited from me) 1977 Nova. He left the dog in the car when he went to the post office. It was -50F outside. He realized he had locked himself out, and that if he didn't get in in a hurry, the dog would freeze to death.

So he goes to the police station across the street and asks if they have a slim jim. They tell him no.

Then he goes to our friends' pharmacy next to the post office and asks: "Do you have a hammer I could borrow?"

"Sure, what do you need it for?" our friend the pharmacist replies.

"Gonna break my window."

He goes back to the post office, and addresses everyone in the lobby: "That is my car outside. I locked my keys in it. I am breaking into it. I am not stealing it."

He goes back out to the car and smashes the smallest window on the car, one of the little windows on the rear door. Gets the car started, saves the dog.

He goes to return the hammer, and the pharmacist asks him "Why didn't you ask for a coat hanger?"
