The odds are pretty good that they'll make it to the majors, usually within about a 3-5 year span, but that doesn't mean they'll be effective. I looked at the 2002 draft to see what had happened with the top 10:
Established big leaguers - Adam Loewen, Zack Greinke, Prince Fielder, Jeff Francis, B.J. Upton
Made an appearance - Bryan Bullington, Scott Moore
Who? - Chris Gruler, Drew Meyer, Clint Everts
The previous year of 2001 was similar, giving us stars like Mauer, Prior (before injuries), and Teixeira, but also providing us with Josh Karp and Colt Griffin.
Even at the top, it's a bit of a crapshoot.

Sometimes it doesn't take long at all for a top pick to make it look at great young players like Prince Fielder, Rickie Weeks, JJ Hardy, Ryan Howard, and Ryan Braun (1 year in the minors now the starter at 3rd base). It all depends on how well the prospect plays and the needs of the team.

very few make in the year that they are drafted or even up by the next draft but one that comes to memory is Huston Street with the Oakland A's even though he wasn't a top ten draft pick.
