I'm closer to my mom's side of the family, because most of them live in the United States. I see them often. I have a tight bond with a lot of my cousins on my mom's side of the family. My dad's family lives in Mexico, so I've never met them before.

I guess I should say "neither".
Both of my grandfathers died the same year, exactly 36 years before I was born.
My mom's mother was her adoptive mother. I knew her up until she died when I was 13.
My dad's mother was alive until I was 9, but she lived far away. I talked to her on the phone a few times, but very rarely. Those were the days when people said, "Shhhhh! It's a long distance phone call!"
And the operator said, "Number please!" LOL!

My mom's...
Sheeit. My DAD is closer to my mom's side of my family!(He is only cool with a few of his own family members. His brother-in-law, and his big sister's kids. His big sister and brother-in-law were a much better influence on him than his mother. Yeah. That's more info than you asked for, isn't it?)

I used to be closer to my Dad's parents, then they died and now my dad has died. If I had to choose now I would say my Mom's but that's not saying much.
