The balas will get to be 12-13 inches each and will be too active to be confined in a tank that size. They should have a 75-90 gallon at least. You could keep smaller ones in it for a while, but you would need to get a larger tank for them in the future.

If you would like something that looks similar to balas that would work in your 55 gallon, You might look at a diamond tetra. These are silver and also school.

NOTE: It doesn't matter if it's an inch of fish per gallon or a gallon per fish, neither is a good rule to follow. You couldn't possibly keep a 10 inch oscar in one gallon or a 10 gallon tank - it wouldn't be able to move!

Figure 1 fish inch per gallon of water in the tank.
It depends on the size of the fish in question.
So, hypothetically, if your 6 bala sharks are 2 inches each, the rainbow shark 2 inches and the 4 zebra danios 2 inches each, that would be a total of 22 fish inches and that would leave plenty of room for your finny friends to grow.
Don't be afraid to ask at the pet store where you're getting your fish. They are usually very knowledgable about these things.

To figure it out, your tank will hold 55" of fish so 11 5" fish...more if the fish are smaller...figure out the adult size of the fish you want, then you will know how many you can get.

balas grow huge and very quick..id get 2-3 for sure. we have some here in town well over a foot and a 210 gallon is just right for them. its not just that theyre too big for the tank, but they are skiddish fish and will swim right into your tank and bust their faces up til theyre completely flat. and believe me, if a big one hits it hard enough your tank will break easy.id start with just the 2 and definatley dont overfeed them to slow their growth some.even with those few tho you will need to upgrade to a bigger tank in the future. i would add more danios because they will somewhat school together and that always looks cool in any size tank.

i have three fish tanks one 90 gal salt water one 55 gal fresh water and one 30 gal freshwater. its not in the quantity of fish that you get. its the size of the fish you get. it is not one fish per gallon of water it is supposed to be one inch of fish per gallon of water. so if you get 55 fish that are only one inch (including the fins) your cool but you would be doing alot of work to keep the tank in the right ballance. if you get one fish that is 10 inches you need to take some of the one inch fish out. and you would still be doing alot of water changes to keep the tank at the right balance. if you choose to get less fish you would be able to not only let the fish you get grow bigger but also you would be able to maintain the water balance easier. it all depends on how much you want to spend cleaning the tank and adding chemicals to care for the ammonia, nitrate, nitrate, ph balance, and alkaline. among many others to keep it at the correct balance.

1 one inch fish needs 1 gallon of water. A 2inch fish would need 2 gallons of water and so on and so fourth .Thats the rule.

i dont think that's too many. when i went to petland, to buy fish, the man who worked there said that it should be about 1 fish per gallon so i think youre fine.
