Well now, like if it is done like in class then well it is like (shake head here) "classwork" not like homework, right? lol

But seriously, homework is used to extend the time that students are engaged in learning. Some students just work slower than others.
It is an opportunity to involve parents and guardians in their child's learning which admittedly can be frustrating for some parents.
It provides students with time to review and practice what has been learned. Studies prove that we learn and remember more of what has been reviewed within 24 hours.
In my opinion, homework definitely needs to be independent practice such as reading 15 minutes each evening or drill on those math facts just learned.
Homework supports the self-discipline required for independent study. Now there's a concept!
There are guidlines for homework that involve common sense such as not expecting a student to use what is not available to them. Give feedback on homework. And last but not least - what you address - is teachers can allow time in class for students to begin work on Homework so the teacher can give guided practice. And yes, teachers can spend time in class answering questions about the assignment.

This is funny but I don't fully agree on it. I am a techer by the way. Let me answer this by another story. The Parable of the Billiards Table There was once a very good sculptor who made a billiards table and put it in his workshop near a school. The students began playing billiards after school. The school administrators and teachers noticed that there was a decline in the students' performance in school and they unanmously blamed it to the billiards table. So they agreed to talk to the old sculptor. They asked the old man to move the billiards table to another place farther from the school. They cannot hear each other because there was, by that time, an apprenctice sculptor cursing his chisel because it was too dull. However, the old man, understanding the concerns of the teachers, rose up and went to his apprentice. He took the dull chisel and started using it and made a very good sculpture. Then, facing the teachers, he said, "There is no dull chisel to a master sculptor." What's my point? I, as a teacher should be responsible to my students' performance. Am I a teacher and I can't compete the influence of a billiards table to get my students' attention? There are a lot of things a teacher can do to motivate his/her students to study hard and learn and be prepared for the future. There are three things that are important in the learning process: the student, the teacher and the learning environment. These three should be blamed, not the students only, if the learning process fail. "There is no dull chisel for a master sculptor." This came from a teacher.

I have been advocating for many years that "homework" should be the work you didn't finish in class. If you finished it in class then you probably understood the work, but for those who didn't understand the work what makes people think that going home to work on it will make the student understand better?

I really don't understand why Elementary, and Middle School students need "homework". High School students should only have homework when there isn't time in class.

Yes, "homework" should be done in the classroom with the teacher's help. If the student didn't get it the first time around then it is the teacher's job to teach them the second time around.

Makes complete sense to me......I have been doing this for almost 20 years. :-)

Homework is work that the teacher expects you to do on your own. It should be something you are fairly comfortable with, its used as practice. However if the student is struggling the teacher should be available once a week after school for a half an hour. But generally homework is work that should be done outside of the classroom.

Frankly I am not too big on homework, in fact I have a "No Friday Homework" rule. Kids should be able to be kids. They work 7 hours a day at school, they shouldn't have to work much more at home.

I agree completely. However, it is VERY difficult to get some students to begin their homework in class. They would rather talk than work. I even point out the very thing you are saying about doing the work while the teacher is there to help you. It most frequently falls on deaf ears.

Always ask the teachers if they are able to give some extra help to begin a HW assignment after school if you are still unable to understand it after it's been discussed in class. If they have meetings, teachers can ask another student who is doing well in class to come in and mentor. Sometimes when students have difficulty, another student can be a big help.

I always have kids start it in class, always offer out of class time for help, and always go over it the next day in class....
I dont believe in giving more homework then I have time to go over in class, and homework is practice...except for like essays...
so it can be changed in class during go over time also....
