Are there not enough private organizations that have the funds to research?

I wrote my senator asking him to support stem cell research giving him the various reasons why I was in favor of it (possible cures for several diseases) and also telling him that there was no moral objection in that the embryos they were talking about where scheduled to be disposed of anyway. I felt that rather than dump them down a garbage disposal why not use them to help people that might otherwise continue to suffer and die from terrible diseases.

I received an email 3 weeks after the vote in which he emphatically stated that he was against stem cell research based on moral grounds. It was my impression that senators are elected to serve the will of the people. Oh well.

And no, there are not enough private organizations that have the funds to do this research. Those funds have to come from private donations. Most people don't think of donating to these foundations unless they have a family member with that particular disease.

I just watched Anderson Cooper talking about earmarks. If we can fund ski lifts and runways in obscure little towns with OUR tax money, we should be able to fund medical research.

Should, but not embryonic stem cell, I disagree with the fashion in which they obtain those stem cells, I feel it is cruel and unusual, we cannot even treat our animals in that manor, yet we will partially deliver a baby and basically stab scissors into the back of the head of a fully viable fetus. There are other ways to obtain these same stem cells, I would not have a problem with collecting every umbilical cord, and placenta in the country from full term babies, nearly eight million a year. There are also countries that have had huge successes using stem cells from bovine, and swine in curing autism, and working on Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's. It is time that the left wing gets off the fine line in the country of what is moral and what is not, and actually work toward solutions that do not require the country to have to take sides. This would free up the funds for the research, and we could catch up to other countries that are far out pacing us in stem cell research without using the controversial embryonic stem cells, and then maybe children like my son could receive treatment right here in my own country that could improve his adult life far over his childhood.

okay there are two different arguments in this. almost everybody is okay with stem cell research it is emproynic stem cells where the fight lies. Pres. Bush has given more money to stem cell research then any president. pres. Bush has allowed for some lines from emproynic stem cells to be tested on, but will not fund it. the problem with emproynic stem cells they are not as good as adult. there were test with them and gave mice brain tumors. and many privately funded groups are moving away from embroynic stem cells because they have not produced any results, while other stem cells have. here is a nice article with the list of adult stem cells sucesses.

there are many labs in the country where equipment has been bought with federal money. This stuff cannot be used on new stem cell lines. It is creating a huge amount of waste and chaos.
The embryos will be thrown in the trash anyway. But the right wing religous lobby is large and has a lot of votes.

The bottom line is that Bush is a ASSHOLE. Plain and simple

Our contemporary government's view is that stem cells are human beings who deserve protection until they are able to enhance up and be sent to Iraq to die so as that millionaires can keep their funds and everybody ought to purchase inexpensive gasoline for their autos.

the private companies consider the fact that they would lose money from religious nut jobs suing them for doing something religiously incorrect but the government should fund stem cell research. if it does work, lots of people would be saved, if the religious nut jobs don't want to be saved, then its fine with me.

Because the privates don't like to spend their money. They would rather spend ours until they get results, then they want to keep all the money! Nice scam!

i am totally for it. my brother has diabetes and i see the toll it has taken on him. the embryo's usually get thrown out any ways why not save a life with them. some people say that it is cruel to the embryo but, i say why not save a living life then keep this thing that may or may not become a living thing.
