it depends what kind of turtle...most of them you can tell by looking at the bottom shell-the plastron...if it is concave it is a male, if it is flat it is a female...this may not work for a snapping turtle however because its plastron is so small
in box turtles you can tell by the eyes- males have red and females have orange, yellow, or brownish
in spotted turtles the male has brownish eyes and a tan, brown or black chin and the female has orange or yellowish eyes and a yellow or orange chin
alot of female turtle species also have longer tails than the males but this is relative and can be hard to judge

Well, different species have different characteristics. What kind of turtle is it? If it is a box turtle, then you can look at the bottom of its shell. A male box turtle will have an indent much like the palm of your hand. The bottom of a female's shell will not have any kind of indent. Also, in box turtles, most males have red eyes. I have, however, found that a few of my females have almost red eyes (they're sort of orange).

In other species, the tail of a male is usually much larger & sometimes longer than a female.

Unfortunately, since I don't know what type of turtle you're asking about, I can't give you anymore specifics. You can send me a message though & I'll see what I can do.

Males have very long front claws and longer, thicker tails with a cloacal opening that extends past the edge of the carapace. Females have shorter front claws, shorter, thinner tails and their cloacal openings do not extend past the edge of the carapace.

also, females are normally longer than males.
