Selfishness is a part of ur "id", the oneself, the word "I" and as a common man you cannot ignore it. So ur selfishness comes first and next comes ur care for others. Even the nicest human being is selfish and I can prove that.
If you get happiness by caring others then the happiness you get is the selfishness that enable u to care others. Human mind always has itself in the centre point and assumes that the whole world rounds it. Some people do it for pride, some do it for self satisfaction and some one with good will but rarely people do it just mere habit. If u meet someone who does it as a habit, pat him on his back and motivate him and ensure that he doesnt expect appreciation for his work. once he expects anything for his work, the selfishness in his mind governs. I believe that i ve made a point here.
It is not whether u r selfish or not but how much selfish are you that counts. Let us all try to keep it to a very low level as possible so that it become negligable eventhough it still exists.

Are there other people, or are we all elements of a larger organism, such that we are always either injuring ourselves by hurting others or helping ourselves by helping others. Is that the big picture?
