alright i've heard it so many times it's driven me insane. i've also looked it up billions of times. now i want 1 final definitive answer.

My Chemical Romance is Emo, not only because of their music, but their appearance. Your going to have a million little emo kids telling you that they are not emo,but punk rock, don't pay any mind to them, they grew up on MTV and don't know how to make their own musical choices. Everyone that reads my answer is going to hate it because it is true, the former president of MTV said it best " We don't play what people like, we tell them what to like", so please to fall in with the crowd, and listen to what everyone else thinks is "cool" make your own musical choice and don't fall for what is shoved down your throat.

No, My Chemical Romance is not emo, and they hate to be labeled as emo.
They are alternative rock...you could even put their earlier stuff into Horror Punk probably (more than emo at least), even punk revival.
Emo had it's origins from hardcore punk and indie rock in the mid 80s. Since MCR credits Queen, Pink Floyd, and Iron Maiden (Ray the guitarist also adds Slayer and Megadeth) as being some of their biggest musical influences (and the stuff they listened to as kids) I hardly think that you could put them into emo.
But people are and will continue to label them as that no matter how wrong they are. I think most of the time, as soon as someone comes across a band they don't like.. "Ew they suck. They're emo". Half the time...not even true.

I think there emo/punk with some rock, I definitely think the singers are emo or goth.
If some one calls you emo its no big deal its a multiple meaning word with tons
of different meanings like emo/punk or emo/rocker depending on ones prospective. Where you only wanting to know about the music or you.
This is kinda funny cause I've asked the same question about myself, I don't look emo but I have the attitude of one.

Here is the thing, it doesn't matter. This is an age old question with different bands and different styles of Music. Everyone is going to have a different opinion on what is and what isn't emo. the genres of music are so fractionalized that you will never get an answer from someone else. Only you can answer the question for yourself.

Never confuse them with being Emo. Emo is emotionally charged hardcore punk music. MCR is neither "hardcore" nor "punk". Trying to cram bands into a genre is pointless, all bands have their own style, influences, and sound. But for God's sake, don't try and put MCR into the Emo genre. It should never be done.
I've read these other answers and it's clear that no one besides me has any grasp of what Emo music is. Trust me, I am a huge hardcore punk fan and I've been exposed to Emo music, which is highly underground and nothing like MCR.

No, MCR is not emo. They are alternative rock. And anybody who knows what emo is, would know right off the bat that they are NOT emo.
Here's an example from Urban Dictionary: Taking Back Sunday, Senses Fail, and My Chemical Romance falls under the "horrible pop rock" genre, not the emo genre.
Rites of Spring is emo.

technically it's not truly 'emo' because emo was a type of music from a long time ago, and mcr's not that. But the lyrics sound a little emo. So i'd say sort of. But not really.

emo is term where no one really has a certain answer to what the meaning is, some say its a genre of music, some say its how you dress, some say if you listen to "emo" music, you are emo, others say if you're a guy and wear tight pants and eye liner you're emo, theres so many different meanings to emo.
if you think guys wearing eye liner is emo, then i guess mcr is emo, but idk if they're music is considered emo...?
but if you comapre mcr with like brittney spears, they're emo
idk if that made any sence

I don't think so.
I would say REAL emo people stay trapped in themselves because they know being emotional is nothing to show. All emos who PROCLAIM & SPREAD that they are emo are the posers. I repeat: THERE IS SUCH A THING AS REAL EMOS. They're not the kind to hurt themselves in any way & tell peeps they did coz' they know hurting themselves is stupid.

It depends on how you look at emo. Emo it technically a slang term for emotional in that case some MCR songs could be considered emo. But today most people think of emo as guys dressed in tight clothes singing about how no one understands them. If you think of emo like that then no Mcr is not emo. It just depends on you perception of emo.

No they are NOT emo.The band says so themselves. Here is a quote from wikipedia;
' The band themselves described their music as simply "rock" or "violent, dangerous pop" on their official website, as well as rejecting the term "emo" '
So they are NOT emo. You can see for yourself.
