What exactly is a person-cenetered approach when communicating?

I understand it involves listening but what are some other approaches that could be used when communicating?

You have listening. How about repeating what the person said and then asking if that is what they meant. You can also rephrase what the person said and ask what they meant. Often we respond to people's statements with a statement of our own and we do not show acknowledgement of what they said. Sometimes our response to their statement bears no relationship to what they said, even though we begin with "yes, but...". It is like we totally ignored them.
After we establish that we truly heard what they said, instead of giving a rebuttal, sometimes a question would be better, like "Now I see. How do you think what you are saying explains this..." Maybe the person can respond by repeating or rephrasing what you said so that you know that they understood it before answering your question.
