He's politely listening to the sound of your voice. He's like the picture on the old RCA Victory record labels which showed a dog (named Nipper) with his head tilted. The picture is called "His master's voice".

Your dog is doing niether. Because your literally 'talking' to the dog it is confused. When a dog tilts it's head its a sign of confusion. it's trying to look at something from a different angle to understand what's going on. If you need to get the dog to do something, or listen, teach he/she to learn 1-3 word commands. When it's listening it's ears will go up and he'll look straight at you. I'm in the process of raising a 7 month old Labrador myself...

Dogs tilt their heads to the side when they access part of their brain. They are trying to deciper what you are saying, so they are listening. Sometimes it's because they 'understand' what you are getting at, such as if they hear their name and realize you are talking about them, whereas other times it's because you are making a strange noise that they are trying to figure out.

That's so cute. I normally see dogs do that when they don't understand something (like talking toys, or something like that) But if your dog does this on a normal basis, he must be doing both.

Once when my friend got drunk, she was slurring very badly. She tried telling her dog to do something (normally he's very obedient), but, instead, he just sat there tilting his head to aside. He didnt' understand what she was saying and was trying to make it out. (So was I.)

But that's so cute and sweet. I love animals.

He's listening to your voice. His ears perk up and he tilts his head and looks at you, right? CUTE!

Skaggy: I beg to differ, dogs DO understand, they're smart.

I like these cute questions! I just asked one, and one person asked if I was drunk, and another basically called me stupid! LOL Hey, it's entertainment! Well, they are very polite, but I do believe the little mister or missy is actually listening! You can see it in their eyes!

When my dog does that, she is hoping with all of her doggie heart to hear these words...

" Are you ready for a walk?"

Now that she understands perfectly clear !!!

He probably thinks you are a little off kilter for talking to him. He's just trying to straighten you out.
