The Senate passed Sen. Inhofe's amendment to the immigration bill declaring English our official language by a vote of 64-33 on June 6. Sen. Inhofe's amendment also nullified Executive Order 13166, the federal mandate for providing
government-funded services in foreign languages.
the Senate then did an about-face and passed an opposing amendment by Sen. Ken Salazar (CO) by a vote of 58-39 that said English was merely our "common language" (with no meaning in law) and gave full congressional authorization to Executive Order 13166. How does one amendment nullify the other? Even though they contradict each other, both of these amendments are now in the Senate immigration bill. If immigration bills eventually pass both houses of Congress the Democratic Leadership will control the conference committee that reconciles the differences and produces a final bill. Call your senator and demand they support Inhofe and vote against Salazar!

So do you think the people who come here willingly should learn OUR language--or do you want to be forced to learn another language?

If someone wants to immigrate-they need to assimilate. I am not opposed to immigrants using their native language among fellow immigrants and in their homes, but in America we speak English--and they should learn it. Accomodating them should be a courtesy--NOT MANDATORY. Think about it. Businesses who offer bilingual staff would attract those who refuse to learn our language. Those who "chose" (a great lib word) not to offer the services will not have to pay for an interpreter and will not have to face law suits for "misinterpretations". If someone who refuses to learn English wants to frequent a business that does not offer bilingual staff--they need to furnish their own interpreter--at their own expense. That goes for goverment documents, offices and elections--printed in ENGLISH! Everybody wins. If they refuse to learn our language--it is THEIR problem--not ours.

The immigration bill is a scam.... It shouldn't be passed ammendments or not. The *ONLY* thing that should be done now is to secure our borders and enforce *existing* hireing laws.... THEN we can decide what to do with the 20 million tresspassors.

As to your last question; why would I be forced to do it...this is still America isn't it? Why would you feel "forced", our society has always been about our differences...why should that change now? Because there are 12 million of them?

America is great, immigrants created it, and to this day continue to support it. Stop being fearful of losing something...and start living life.
