They can be anywhere from green to brown in color, average is about 3-5 inches long, but they can be shorter or longer. they have big bugged-out eyes and their two "arms" are curled like it is praying. Here is a link to a picture:

P.S. If you see one, don't kill it because they are endangered, also they are good because they eat other bugs, like mosquitoes, etc.

It's a praying mantis and they kind of look like a stick with legs. They're usually a pretty green color and they have a round head that can turn with big eyes giving the impression of being more animal-like than other insects. They can sit for really long periods waiting for something to eat that either walks or flies. They sit with their front legs held up and folded ready to snatch. They look like they're praying when they do that.
Although they can inflict a pain-full bite, they rarely do, being a very peacefull creature and they seem oblivious to our presence. They can fly but they spend most of their time sitting. they have kind of long legs and they rarely move fast. they're much easier for the squimish to tolerate because they're so slow.
When I lived in the desert, There was quite a collection that would hang around on the clothes line and various other places. They are great to have around because they rid the area of pesty bugs.
Once when I left my trailer door open, one mozied on in at a leisurely pace. I said "Hey little guy!" and he stopped and turned his head and looked at me. I said he was going to have to leave, I turned him around and he mozied right back out. They're just cool little guys! I love 'em, can you tell?
