How about a gift card for his favorite store?

Gift Card to the Local Hardware Store (or Lowes, Home Depot, whatever), NEW tools (how about a Mechanics Tool Set), Gift Certificate for some accessories for his computer (or a new bag for his laptop), add to his sports equipment (how about that putter he has his eyes on but won't buy for himself), Shop Vac (for the garage/car), books that he likes to read, some good DVDs of movies that he watched with HIS Dad when growing up (there are LOTS like this coming out now for very little cost), etc etc etc!

ask some gorgeous girl to drop by in good "attractive" dress. ring the bell and make sure your dad opens the door, and she sings happy birthday to you, and hands him over a birthday card from you....
make sure she leaves after this :-) because 40 is naughty.
