Water will do just fine... Would likely destroy any vehicle it goes into... so remember not to use it yourself! lol. Um gas stations test for water in the tank and must have it pumped out (By law, of course they don't always do it) so it does in fact cause alot of damage when it gets into your vehicle.
About the garden and onion situation... I remember this joke I read once... (I'm not really good at remember jokes and the details, but it's close enough ok)
This farmer kept finding that cabbages were missing from his farm. Every day he would find more and more gone. So one day he put up a sign that said "I poisoned one of these cabbages, try to guess which one" trying to deter them from stealing again.
I thought it was pretty clever...
Of course he came back the next day and found another sign "I poisoned one of your cabbages, try to guess which one" so I guess it didn't really work out.
I hope you called the police and filed a report. They probably wont do anything, but chances are the thief lives nearby, is one of your neighbors. Call the police and try to get them to come out, if you can, at a time when most of the neighbors are home. Just seeing the police car may be enough to make them stop...

I got this from the MythBusters website and found it interesting.
What happens when certain household products are added to gasoline? These myths used an engine and gasoline tank only. The tank was drained and cleaned between additives.
Does liquid drain cleaner cause the gas to explode? Liquid drain cleaner was added to the gas tank. The engine was started and nothing happened. The engine was then revved and again nothing happened.
Myth Busted.
Does bleach ruin an engine? The car stalled when bleach was placed into the gas tank. Additionally, the gas sat overnight prior to cleaning and the tank rusted up. Jamie says the rust would be sucked through the fuel system as a result of the corrosion.
Myth Plausible.
Does placing sugar in the gas tank ruin the engine? After sugar was added to the tank, nothing happened, even after Adam shook the tank. They leave the sugar in the tank overnight for maximum effect. The next morning the car starts.
Myth Busted.
Do adding mothballs to gasoline increase horsepower? Jamie mixed up a batch of mothball gasoline and poured it into the gas tank. The engine actually sounded better, although Adam and Jamie do not recommend trying it as there may be unknown side effects.
Myth Plausible.

Sorry people.Sugar in the gas tank will do as much to your engine
as trying to teach a fish how to swim! LOL!.Water in the tank will only delay starting as gas is oil based and floats on top of the water.(WHICH IS WHY ALL PILOTS ALWAYS DRAIN THEIR FUEL TANKS A LITTLE BIT BEFORE EACH FLIGHT TO GET RID OF ANY CONDENSATION".Harmless in a car,but lethal in aircraft!!!.Putting diesel in your tank will stuff your engine let alone who is stealing it.For a cheap solution goto an auto parts store and get a lockable cap for your tank!.

Figure this: If your car is not a high-performance car, use 87. If it is, use 89. There is no car that demands 93, just egos.

Sugar does not dissolve in gasoline, it will settle to the bottom of the container. How much gas are you storing that it is worth stealing? And if it is significant, wouldn't it be better to store it in a way that it is difficult to steal?

But it will mess up YOUR car!
why don't you just get a mechanic to fit an anti theft filter to your fuel filler?
