I guessing this is to define your party leanings and it is illegal. I'm not sure what state you're in, but this should be reported to whatever department oversees business-labor relations.
In Michigan even if you're applying for a job in the Governor's Office that can't ask about your personal politics.
You may --again depending on the state -- be able to seek damages on this.

You do not have to answer the question. Though they cannot ask it, you cannot sue them for asking. If you don't get hired, and you feel that it was because of your political affiliation, or lack thereof, discuss it with a lawyer.
