I'm 21 years old and still don't know how to drive. Everyone keeps telling me that I need to learn. They seriously make a big deal out of it.
Anyway, I can't help but feel pathetic because I have a 15 and 18 year old sister who can drive. All my friends know how to, they even have their liscenses. Once I was even told it "was a disgrace" that I didn't know how.
I took the car out twice when I was 17 but my mom isn't the most adequate person to learn how to drive with. She would always shout, or do something that just made me hate learning. The so-called lessons stopped there and I haven't gone behind a steering wheel since then. It's irritating all the time to be asked "do you know how to drive now?" from peers or mom's friends, and then have them make up some idiotic comment.
So, am I pathetic? do they really have reason to poke fun at me?
I really want to learn but money's a bit tight right now for a driving school and no one seems to want to help me atleast with basics.

I didn't learn how to drive until I was 20 and didn't get my license until 22. But I live in a place that has a really good bus system, so though it is more convenient to drive, it is more cost effective to ride the bus. I have my DL, but don't own a car. To the people who tease or criticize, tell them to teach you then, if you are such a "disgrace", and if they won't then to just lay off. Other wise don't feel bad. Driving is a great responsibility, and when you are ready and have the right teacher, you'll learn.

My sister didn't learn until in her 20's also.

Look it's not such a big deal but it can be a nuisance to you in later life if you do not have a driving licence.

You have started the wrong way because you tried to get a relative (or friend) to teach you to drive. There is no guarantee that they are good drivers and you can pick up the wrong ideas from them. I know someone who was taught by a neighbour and he does many wrong things like braking while cornering and declutching at highway speed. (Shudder) Secondly, they are likely to shout at you.

It is far better to get some professional lessons, preferably in a manual car. These people are used to beginners. You can then drive almost anything on four wheels. If you can ride a bicycle or dance you can drive a manual car.

OK well I'm not from America, I'm from New Zealand - but I'm 19 and I'm planning to sit my practical test in a few months - i did the written part 2 years ago! Its very scary because i live in the city, and especially where i live there are lots of windy and narrow roads that even when you are an experienced driver seem to be bloody difficult to get around! I have blamed it all on my Dad for not taking me out driving - and yes i am still living with them :( All my friends have full drivers licenses and i feel like an absolute loser for not having one myself. I don't know if your government does subsidies for students or whatever, they do here. Beg your parents, let them know that its important! It's obviously expected of you so you might as well utalise your parents and also your clear mind before you get old and senile. And yes it is bloody scary - I'm absolutely pissing myself thinking about it, but I'm going to do it and so should you!

You are not pathetic. It is great you want to learn. You don't really have to know but it feels so good to be able to when needed. Got a good friend that can take you to a big, empty lot or quiet suburban neighborhood? Are your sisters willing? This can give you the confidence without being made nervous.
Good luck!

I'm sorry but that is a little bit pathetic. LEARN. It is a important party of any Americans live unless you are going to live in NYC your whole life. I never met someone who is over 19 years old and is a US resident that does not know how to drive. Also for many jobs etc.. they ask you for your drivers license and many jobs you may be required to drive. Driving is essential in America today. It is not very hard thing to do and it is very easy to get a license in the United States, it is a little bit to easy that's why there are so many bad drivers out there. But start learning already! What is wrong with you? You can always taking professional driving lessons with a driving instructor just look in your local phone book and make an appointment.

That really depends where you live. If you live in say, New York or San Francisco, a car is just not neccesary.

If you live in someplace like Arizona, and you aren't driving, you do not have a life. You may think you do but you don't. Based on your friends' attitudes, I'm guessing you live someplace you really ought to be able to drive.
