Depending on state, yes, it's legal to ask about political affiliation if it applies directly to the position, as in this instance. That's about the only place it's legal.

I suppose if you're going to work for a political campaign, it is valid to ask. But perhaps not; perhaps the law would expect you can assume their affiliation by the fact that they applied for the job. In general, it is not legal as far as I know.

Well, it might be legal, in some areas, but definitely it is unethical!
Even for political campaigns, the interviewer should be interested in the results of the work of the interviewee rather than his religious,political, etc. believes and inclinations.

Most states have laws prohibiting questions that could lead you to discriminate against a prospective employee. Best to check with your state's workforce commission.

Legal or not, I would ask it, I don't want hire any losers to work for me. It would hurt the moral to have democrats amongst us.
