The biggest thing that couples fail to do when considering this option is to lay out a set of rules. As long as the rules that are agreed too are followed then there should be no problems. Its not about opening a new area of trust nor is it about acheiving new levels of whatever. It is about sex plain and simple. Anybody that tries to sell it as anything else is trying to con you. Marriages usually fail due to lack of money or sex . What better way to eliminate one of the biggest issues for divorce? People in America really need to seperate love and sex. They are two completely different beasts.

Not all.. but only if both parties really agree to it. I know a couple that is in a open marriage and have been married for over 10 years. They have rules that they must abide by but they both are very happy.

Open marriages are about sex, pure and simple. It's an excuse to have sex with someone other than your spouse, and they fluff it up with talk about 'trust' and 'new levels of openness', etc.
I had a very good freind who actually got into this with her husband. He talked her into this, and the first night, she just backed out because she didn't WANT to have sex with someone other than her husband.
Isn't that the point of marriage? You are with that person because you love them? They are your mate for life and you want to be with them and only them??
But her husband however felt differently and she realized his desire for sex outside of the marriage was tied in to his lack of ability to commit to her emotionally.
Let me put it another way; your sex life is a reflection of your marriage. If your sex life is not monogomous, your marriage is not on solid ground. There is no commitment there, because you can have sex with anyone! So what's the point of being married in the first place?
I would think very carefully before you considered this kind of arrangement.

YES!!! Because if your having an open marriage, your not respecting your partner and also not taking your marriage vows seriously. Because when you say your wedding vows when you get married you say forsaking ALL others, keeping yourselves only to each other. Not having sex with whoever you want.

If the 2 people involved can deal with it than good for them.
how many couples sleep in different rooms, or haven't had sex in years, but if they still love each other and can get over the social stigmatize, than good for them. If it makes them happy than everyone else should mind there own business.
By the way the woman running for president doesn't seem to have a problem with it, and I repeat it none of our Business
