I'm an old school rugger and I think line-out battles are far better when there is no lifting.

Its better because without jumping its more of a contest for the ball (ie the other team has a better chance of stealing the ball) Look at the percentages of winning your own ball before and after they allowed lifting.

I guess making it 'cleaner' is why I don't like it. Rugby is supposed to be a bit messy.

I'm only 6' tall and I played a lot of lock and flanker and I was usually a jumper and while I often faced much taller opponents, I have long arms and have a good vertical jump. The skill of actually jumping for the ball has been lost.

And of course there was a bit of cheating but thats true for all aspects of the game and its for the referee to sort out.

I've played both before & after the introduction of lifting.

Surely you must know that even in the days when lifting was illegal, it still happened all the time, it was called "supporting the player at the top of his jump".

Personally, I think it's one of the better rule changes to be implemented. It's cleaned up all the "niggle" in the lineout & made it a much cleaner contest for the ball.

Look at the farce scrums have become these days with the "Crouch, touch, pause, engage" rule. IMO it's made scrums more dangerous than the old days, when the two packs could stand back a metre or so & smash together on engagement.......... those were the good old days.......

I wish you Americans with a very limited understanding of the game would refrain from giving daft answers.......... Chad, if you're school age now, how can you possibly comment on what the game was like 20 years ago??

I like lifting in the line-outs. It's made the line-outs cleaner, and removed another reason to stop the game ie illegal lifting. But I do miss the good old days when you had a gun line-up jumper. John Eales was our man both before and after lifting, but I miss the days when he leapt on his own and won - inspiring!
