Some years ago a group of top guitarists took a challenge to play certain passages as fast as they could without making mistakes. The winner was Alvin Lee (of "Ten Years After"). Listen to his recording "I'd Love to Change the World" (which, interestingly gets progressively faster while he's playing softer) & you'll get some idea.
Joe Satriani, Edward Van Halen and Steve Vai are also impressive in that regard.
However, how fast you play isn't nearly as important as how well you play (which is why Buckethead, for one, would have probably already been forgotten if he didn't have that stupid gimmick).
