I'm a fan of AMD, but they're both good brands. Generally though, AMD hardware is a little bit cheaper and tends to run a little bit faster than Intel. In the end though, if you have a good motherboard picked out in either case, you won't have any real compatibility issues. A lot of people focus on processor and then get a cheap motherboard, which defeats the purpose if you want a good system. I've used both brands extensively in the past and never had any real problems with either, so nothing negative against Pentiums.
I'm currently running on an AMD X2 64-bit 3800+ and it's been a workhorse for me and didn't break the bank.
Check out some benchmarks and you'll see that the newest gen chips are pretty neck and neck, as typical, Intel runs better on some things, AMD on others. As Tom's Hardware's listings show, AMDs are a better value though.

There are a time when AMD processors were on par with Intel; however, times have change. Intel released their dual core duo which outperforms all current AMD processors. AMD was to release their new quad core CPU (a.k.a Barcelona) which was to compete with Intel's dual core duo. The first demo was a total flop. You can read about it at (http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=36131) I will concede that AMD processors tend to be 10-15% cheaper but AMD just can't compete with Intel's newest processors. Dual core duo CPU run faster and use less power than a comparable AMD CPU. It makes a big difference for desktop computers and even bigger difference for laptops, where battery life is a big issue.

It really depends on the list of compatible hardware. Both AMD
and Intel have very good processors. Personally, I like Intel but it really is up to your needs.
