You're right, they are all doing it, and I'm sick of it too. The explanation I heard this week is that they are marketing the 'younger generation'. They say that if they don't do it there might not be enough news viewers in the future to keep the news shows going. I say , BS to that, it is turning the older viewers that they have now away from the news and leaving the lala land viewers to watch things that don't really mean crap.

"What the hell is wrong with the news?
is it just me or do news stations like CNN, MSNBC, ect. keep trying to bring the attention towards entertainment news like Paris Hilton and Anna Nicole Smith. i soooo freaking tired of being lied to. 24/7 news and all they can report is the same 15 entertainment stories every half hour. half the anchors are just pretty faces with no experience, and 90% of the people they interview are gossip columnists!!!!!!!!!! AHHHH!!!!"
well put....................
what i would say is..... more hten half the pple in the us are fricken RETARDED. they would rather hear crap about paris crapton and britney spearstuckinmyhead then about real news... so since thats what the pple want, they print it/ show it... there just after money.

As a former broadcast journalist I am embarrased and angry at what has happened to my profession.
The days of investigative reporting are gone, especially in local TV news programs.
Major media moguls now control the quality of information we get and there is a new breed of reporter - the Advocacy Journalist. We saw this in the Dan Rather/60 Minutes debacle over Bush's National Guard record.
Now we have Katie Couric anchoring a prime time serious broacdast. She has not earned her "chops" to sit at that desk, the desk that Walter Cronkite kept at #1 for his whole career. CBS News with Katie Couric just ended it's worst rating week in the past 20 year history of CBS News.
I could go on and on. The best advice is to seek out news from as many varied sources as possible to fill your need for information.

We are seeing the effects of deregulating the media...time was the same person or entity could not dominate markets...thus we had many independant news sources....somewhat parochial but independant...now the profit motive(greed) drives the media just as it is driving our healthcare delivery system which is now comparable to britains in terms of service delivery. I have lived in EU and have seen non-profit medicine at work...I paid 500 for a years premium and waited 10 days to get surgery. I saw PT there for 10. Here 2 months to see a Dr. 3 weeks to get an MRI and almost 2 months for surgery deemed urgent...I was unable to work the whole time and it takes a year plus to get any help if you are disabled and are not covered for one of the many reasons people are deemed unworthy of health...tis the profit motive where none belongs. EU is doing a good job of hybridizing socialism and regulated capitalism..britain excluded they are still mucking things up as they are arrogant and theocratic and authoritarian which is why the elite are so supportive of US that and we carry the british elite like the manmonster in Mad Max:Thunderdome
It is an honor to have Mr. Desantis weigh in on this. I agree I am sure Mr. Murrow is spinning in his grave at light speed by now...just a bright, angry, red glower wherever he may be

I agree news is more skewed to the entertainment side but that's because the ' experts' have told the news business to dummy it down because the younger people aren't interested in important issues like iraq, the economy, international relations and have the attention span of less than 3 minutes. They don't understand what they hear, they don't read well and they are only interested in movie stars , music stars, sports stars and celebrities. Don't make them think too much.
Sad isn't it.
Glad my canadian news hasn't quite gone that way yet, still have great investigative news programs like the Fifth Estate and W Five.

That seems to be the trend in television. Best bet is to get your news from a variety of sources, including print, electronic and online.
There are some good journalists out there but most of them aren't on the cable news networks. I think Fox is a little better than CNN and CNN is way better than MS-NBC.

Because the media has their own agenda. They will tell you what they want you to hear to take the focus of what they don't want you to know. They edit EVERYTHING to make someone look good or bad. Take a look at who owns the stations? If they are dummcrats, then you will hear all kinds of stuff to make republicans look bad. And vice versa. You need to make up your own mind.

Because like it or not, those topics get ratings and news outlets are still businesses that are driven by profit. The only way to get profit is ratings, which means they need to get people to watch. Celebrity news IS trash, but people just. eat. it. up!
