personally I don't think it's ok to use that word. I was brought up correctly, and NI would feel horrible to use that word in any way shape or form.
I think that the reason why people use that word is because they have no respect for the actual slaves, and even possibly their own ancestors.
there are people calling their friends the "N" word at my school all the time, and it discusses me. if only they knew how much that word hurt the African American slaves.

I'm afraid as long as some blacks think it's cool to use it, there will be people from other races who will be using it as well. Like it or not, the black race has been the one prolonging this "hurtful" word's life.
Why blacks feel that they can re-define this word as they please, and castigate other races who use the word, is beyond me. Blacks have no more special rights to the word than any other race, despite their "hurtful past" (no black really thinks back to their ancestors and how they suffered when this word is used - they only use it as a vantage point to slam whites).
