Gravity is used to man's advantage in numerous ways - and I will try hard to resist the temptation to to say we would be floating off into outer space without it.
Gravity is the primary force that provides friction with the earth's surface or man made roads and walkways - enabling us to walk, drive and steer our vehicles, load goods onto flatbeds and trucks and keep things organized and in place where we left them (even if sometimes we can't remember where we left them.) Gravity was used extensively in building and land mapping with bubble levels and plumb bobs to get the true vertical and horizontal references. I'm sure you can think of many other advantages of gravity in the past - pendulum movement for time keeping, the hour glass, the old mill water driven grinding wheel and so on.
Anyways, without gravity, we would all be floa.................

Gravity does not provide us with friction as stated above. Otherwise a 400 pound person could easily walk across an ice skating rink.
Gravity effects range into thousands of useful things. To make it as easy as possible, though,

Potential Energy = mgh
where;
m = mass
h = height
g = acceleration of gravity

i.e. Water falling through a turbine for hydroelectic power. Water's mass X the height of the waterfall X gravity => kiloWatts.
Since gravity is always 32.2 feet per second per second, the more water - the more force. The higher the fall - the more force.

Carpe Diem! i believe that one must be awake to seize the moment... aware of all that is transpiring and coming into effect as we speak... now whether or not i am awake... depends upon how one sees that reality... i experience the sensation of typing these words to you... are you experiencing the sensation of reading them? perhaps this is an Alchemical moment... according to your definition... but even if it isn't... it is fun writing these words... and i feel transformed. :) (oh we love Alchemy... changing the lead into the gold of Spirit. transformation... thanks for the question.) sean edit: as i consider your question... it is a reflective one... i am reminded of an 'Alchemical' quote... “Someday, after mastering the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity, we shall harness for God the energies of love, and then, for a second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire.” Teilhard de Chardin warm regards...

Man uses gravity to assist in interplanetary travel.

For example, probes sent to explore distant planets like Saturn and Neptune used the gravity of Jupiter to "slingshot" themselves, gaining speed and making the trip much faster.
