The Patriot? You're kidding right? it's Braveheart moved to the American Revolution. Bleh.
War Film suggestions:
Tora! Tora! Tora! about 60-70% historically accurate. Midway just enjoyable.
Saving Private Ryan - just incredible.
Both Flags of our Fathers & Letters from Iwo Jima. Schindler's List - not a "military" war movie per se, but still excellent.
Fat Man & Little Boy
Comedies: History of the World Part I
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
probably not what you had in mind, but they both have
"historical" themes and your sides will hurt from laughing so much.

Elizabeth
Into the West
Chaplin (really more non-fiction, I guess)
Buffalo Girls
Last of the Mohicans
Scarlet Letter

The Libertine with Johnny Depp was the most recent one I enjoyed.

Pans Labyrinth is a little bit fantasy, a little bit historical fiction, & if you haven't seen it yet, you absolutely must! It's fantastic!

.... the most recent Shakespearian type tale I loved was The Merchant of Venice, 2004 with Al Pacino & Jeremy Irons.

I think that should get you started.
