The reation is Mg + 2HCl == MgCl2 + H2

It is a sinlge replacement reaction.

For the ionic equation, just split up the HCl into two ions.

2H+ and 2Cl-.

The chlorine ions drop out in the net ionic equation because they appear on both sides.
