Well I think they usually just mean bands in the same vein as such and such band. It would be silly to listen to bands that were were /exactly/ the same, where is the originality? Though I think it's almost impossible for any two bands to sound exactly alike anyway. But many people [myself included] have types of music that we're most fond of, and would like to find bands that hold the music traits of the preferred music. My favourite bands are The Sisters of Mercy and My Bloody Valentine. The former is a Gothic Rock band, the latter is a Shoegazing band. Quite different genres.
