I am not talking about handouts, It just seems that something is not right. Since when is the government not supposed to be FOR us? btw I am trying to start my own business. This isn't about me, I have my plans, it's about the % of the population that are good honest people who work hard, for years. WHY are the taxes high? WHY does gas cost so much? WHY aren't wages keeping up with the cost of things we actually NEED?

Very good question. It's the greed thing that makes it difficult for some of us who struggle to just make ends meet. Government officials aren't a big help either. They're all about running businesses and getting ahead so little people like us are getting whipped left and right just because there are more of us and less of them. It's sad.

First of all the rent and utilities are too high and the minimum wage is to low.
The foodstamp they give you isn't enough and the cash assitance can't even buy the things you need. Heap isn't enough to cover your heating bills in the winter, so most people who are on the system are destined to be there for many years without any hope of ever doing or making it in this country. Those are some of the many reasons that people need to get a good education or some type of skill.
I am in the restaurant business and I employ over 45 people.
I make a good living now, but it wasn't always like that, I struggled for over five years as I was being sponsored by a hospital for my citizenship, working long hours and being underpaid and one day I made a decision on opening my own business and I planned and finally after 10 years I accomplished my dream. I still haven't accomplished my goal of opening a warehouse and going into the frozen dinner business.
Anyone can accomplish anything in life, you just have to want it bad enough.
A lot of people work very hard and still can't get out off the rot, because they choose not too.. Money management is key, sometimes they live above their means and can't afford anything but want everything so they can and will never get ahead.

I'm answering a question with a question...
What exactly do you want the government to do?
It gives some people free healthcare and most of these very same people are in the doctors office for a sliver in their finger. The rest of us pay healthcare and wonder why the costs are so high. No big wonder, really. When things are given out for free...we then demand more. What we have is never good enough.

Call or email your local representatives or even your state senators and tell them to lower taxes.
Any time a politician says they will increase taxes, tell them no and remember who they are. Don't vote for them.
The tax structure is set up so that the very rich never pay taxes no matter how much politicians say they will make them. It always hurts the middle class wage earners the most.
So don't believe the rhetoric that they will tax the rich to make the poor feel better. It never works that way.
At the moment, unless we lower income taxes or get rid of them (see Fairtax.org) you will never make it unless you become your own boss and start your own business.
Remember, it's not the job of government to make life easier. They should step aside and let honest people pursue their own happiness without choking taxes.

I know people who hardly work, and have no trouble getting by, too.
A large part of it is the career you fell into - let's face it, few of us really plan our career, let alone get the one we planned on. If you're in the wrong industry at the wrong time, things will be hard. If you're right place/right time, you're on easy street.
People don't like to admit how much luck has to do with it.

Are you completely oblivious the conditions in second and third world countries? Hard and struggle lol. If its so hard and a struggle to live in this country why so many overweight and obese people. People without skills or education have to settle for low wage jobs causing them to live paycheck to paycheck. You want to get ahead, further your education, someone with a phd makes around 1 to 2 million a year as an average.

the government should have laws no cell phone until you have bought food no video games until you pay the rent no expensive shoes until you pay for medicals needs. most people waist a lot of their income on non essential items is why they can't get anywhere
