I think the question is answered by the fact that it was said by Alan Colmes, an apologist for every undefensible thing liberals say.
Obviously, the borders can be defended. The American people may decide it's not worth the expense, but we could absolutely keep people from crossing our borders. The government just doesn't want to do it. Both sides are too busy getting intimate with the Latino vote.

200 years? Ha. Right. You dont remember what happened in 1986? The amnesty for illegal aliens? No?
I happen to agree with Colmes. I dont think it is possible. Build a wall, theyll dig under, go over, blow a hole in it, find some way around it. It'll be yet another gigantic waste of money. The issue isnt securing the borders. The real issue is NAFTA. NAFTA has caused huge job losses in the US and Mexico. We're seeing record numbers of Mexicans coming here because they lost their jobs because of that idiotic Agreement. We need to get rid of NAFTA and then be good neighbors and help the Mexican economy get rolling again so all those immigrants will have more to go home to than a cardboard shack!
But thats not the way the politicians want it.

The United States of America was fortunate in having relatively few conflicts with bordering nations. There was some tension with Canada (no, really) at one point, and one war with Mexico, and that was it. For most of those 200 years our meaningful borders were oceans.
But, yeah, most countries manage to control thier borders. But not all do. For instance, Pakistan can't control it's border with Afganistan. Turkey has a heck of a time keeping Kurds from crossing and re-crossing it's border with Iraq - and that's in spite of having (IIRC) 20000 troops guarding it.

Alan Colmes is generalizing.
No one expects perfection. We just want to stop the flood. We would be happy to reduce the flow to a trickle or drip.

Funny how our government stopped our own citizens from doing exactly that. Where are all the second amendment people? I would have thought they would have been lined up across our southern border fighting this invasion of illegals. The enemy is in our streets marching demanding our rights for their wrongs. Where is my country going?
