I am a long time Marino fan, and we all thought at the beginning of his career it was almost guaranteed he would win at least one ring. What happened ? Coaching, defense, running game, Buffalo, or a curse in the playoffs. If Marino had won a ring or two, he would have clearly been the best QB ever. What was the curse, going from '86-'90 with no playoffs, being handled by Buffalo in '90 - '92 - '95, the '94 San Diego meltdown, '95 and the money spending year with free agents(only to end 9-7), or always starting 4-1 or 6-2, and ending up 9-7 or 10-6 without a first round bye. What the hell was the problem or jinx with this team with one of the best QB's ever ?

Three main reasons:
1. He never had a consistent running game, which was a must back then. A one dimensional team just isn't going to go all the way, unless that one dimension is a dominating defense.
2. The owner was unwilling to get the supporting cast to back Marino. He needed defensive stars, a running back, and wide receivers that could actually hold on to the ball.
3. The Miami defense just wasn't that good. The only reason they posted a few half-way decent years was because of Miami's offensive power, which made opponents' offenses one dimensional in many games. Offense puts fans in the seats, but defense wins championships.

Simply because of one main factor: they ONLY focused on Marino and the passing game. Marino did have hall of fame receivers in Mark Duper and Mark Clayton ( most famously the Mark Brothers) a good offensive line, and an offensive philosophy solely focused on passing. The defense was never great, they never found a good running back to compliment Marino. After a while that talent around him diminishes and cant perform to a high level. After that record setting season in 1984, teams finally knew that they needed to stop the pass and worry about nothing else. Although it didnt happen for awhile, Marino's supporting cast began to decrese with teams like Buffalo, and Denver becoming more complete teams and easily handling the Dolphins.
Marino is and always will be one of the greatest QB's to play and can be mentioned in the class of Favre, Montana, and Elway. Even though he never won a superbowl, he was still a great QB who made the best of his situation regardless of whos on his team, unlike a certain choke artist in Elway.

Marino never had a consistent running game or a good defense to support him. Do you remember the running backs that he had through his career? Tony Nathan, Lorenzo Hampton, Sammie Smith, Bobby Humphrey, Mark Higgs, Troy Stradford, Bernie Parmalee, Aaron Craver, Irving Spikes, and Terry Kirby didn't exactly set the league on fire. Keith Byars was a pass catcher, and by the time Karim Abdul-Jabbar came, well Dan was well past his prime.

No defense and a practically inexistent running game, I think the one-dimensional attack was the reason to finish 9-7 after starting 5-1. In playoffs most teams, especially the Bills knew what to expect.

No defense. They always managed to lose it for him.
Also, Buffalo had the best team in the NFL for several years (even though they didn't show up in the Super Bowl) and there was no way Miami was going to beat them in the playoffs in the 1990s, Marino or no Marino.
The teams Miami had to beat to get to and win the Super Bowl were always too good for the Dolphins to handle.

Because He never had the team around him that could play like a team to win the championship. Sure there were a few players around Him that tried, but you need the whole team working together. This includes players, coaches and owners. If the whole team isnt working together then you basically are bound for failure!

No running game,no defense. But what proves he was the greatest ever is the other defenses knew their game plan each and every game. They still could not stop him. What if he had a 1,000 yard rusher to take the heat off of him,or a defense that could stop a cold.

It's probably a number of factors, from coaching to lack of a running game to... you get the picture. Marino - who attended the same Pittsburgh high school as my dad (Central Catholic) - is one of many Hall of Fame caliber quarterbacks to not win a Super Bowl, so don't worry about it.

Simple... he never had a running game. Every game depended on Dan. Most people cannot name another player on the Dolphins during the Marino era.

The Dolphins wouldn't have been a team without Dan. The team never had a running game to support him.
