Private party. No question.

Even an honest dealer is going to charge more for a cheap car (or any car) than a private seller will. And in the low-end cars, you see a lot of dealers who aren't in the business of selling cars, they're in the business of using cars as bait for terrible financing. AND they'll charge "dealer" book prices even though they haven't done their duty as a dealer (ensuring that the car is mechanically sound, repairing obvious problems, things like that.) A dealer can command higher prices because these things are expected of them, and in higher-end lots, they generally DO fix up the cars they sell. In my experience the low-end (BUY HERE PAY HERE especially) places do not.

Unless someone you know can refer you to an honest low-end lot (and in most cases, these will be ones that are associated with an auto repair shop), or you're spending a minimum of 5000 dollars, don't even LOOK at a dealer. Exclude them from your online searches even.

edit: You are NOT getting a warranty on a 1500 dollar car.

At a dealer you could get a warrenty, and possible discounts in the future, you may also have him ripping you off, with a private party you may get a better deal, but you have no assurance since most people wont take it back if there is a real problem, they may also think their car is worth more than it is.

I'd buy from a private party, long before I would purchase from a dealer.

Not to say the court docket charges will consume into the money you have got to fix the auto. Don't get a brand new engine considering the fact that a few rattling mechanic stated so! What used to be the groundwork of his choice?
