Is it mostly methane? Is this what causes the "stench"?

Methane is odorless, so it doesn't contribute to the stench, but it is partially responsible for the bloating. Mathbiomajor had the correct answer, listed above. Short chain diamines really stink!

Yes, I believe you are right. I also know that ammonia forms as well, mostly from the lungs, though I think methane production from the gut is the largest cause.
