any sailing ship is limited by physics to a max speed of : the square root of the length of the ship's waterline times ( roughly) 1.25......so a brigantine 100 foot long on the water is maxed out at 12.5 nautical miles an hour

A brigantine is a sailboat, usually 2 or 3 mast. The hull speed can be calculated by length and displacement. A normal brig will do 8 to 11 knots in a fresh breeze.
