Homosexuality has been documented in almost 500 species of animals, signaling that sexual preference is predetermined

Don, I thought so too, but I was reading Yahoo Answers tonight, and it seems lots of people are still unaware and therefore making prejudicial and hurtful statements, and perhaps even taking actions or voting on the basis of such statements. Even tho Dick Cheney's granddaughter has two mommies.

Interesting, I see some people are willing to believe non-human animals are making a choice . So, to my question - why, then?

All people, not just 'gay' people, are placed in the same category as animals. Given that we're animals and all.

Heart and Troll, I learned in BIO class that 10% of wolves do not mate, but serve as uncles that protect the family offspring. The genes of the group, rather than the genes of an individual from that group, survive. I think humans clearly demonstrated sacrifice for non-child relatives, and keeping a 'priestly class', a certain group not responsible for raising children directly, frees up some members of an animal group for more tasks, thereby enhancing the survival of that group.

Ken C. OH PLEASE. Bush and Cheney ran against Gay Marriage. Karl Rove got gay marriage initiatives on the ballots in many battleground states, to drive up conservative voter attendance. Bush and Cheney lead an administration openly hostile to gays. It certainly matters.

Cowgirl, why does anyone care about what?
When the largest single group of teens that commit suicide are gay, we need to care about the horrific messages many in our culture still endorses.

critter - all behavior is chosen, perhaps. that's by no means settled. however, i am talking about being gay, not having homosexual sex. i'm talking about being wired so that your own sex is sexually stimulating to you. you perhaps propose that gay people not act on the sexual feelings they have. for reasons that aren't quite clear.

heart and troll - yes, the DNA of the wolf family is passed on, that satisfies the drive of the DNA. The individual's DNA doesn't need to be passed on if the family's is passed on. And the group DNA will contain the genes for homosexuality to occur in a certain percentage of the group.

If sexual preference is predetermined, how exactly is that done?
It cannot be genetic, since that concept is refuted by the theory of evolution. Eventually over the billions of years it took for man to evolve, the gay gene would become extinct, since it is less likely to reproduce.
So...if you are correct, how is gayness predetermined?
ADDITION: Your wolf discussion does not answer the question. The uncles do not mate, thus their genes are not part of the reproduction of the next generation. It is easy to see that over time, the percent of gay tendency goes to zero. Unless you consider that the wolves, and humans, choose to be the uncle.

So when my Dog humps my leg it's OK? He didn't choose it?
I feel better now...
No, I don't think the majority choose to be gay. It would be a tough way to go thru life in many respects.
And no, most conservatives don't have any issue with it. Do you see Dick Cheney saying anything negative? No, he just looks like a proud Grand Pappy to me...
Casandra, you need to get a grip. The whole world truly dosn't care about the gay issue. Get married, don't get married, I don't care. The best Mr. Wonderful Bill Clinton could come up with after all his fake promises was "Don't ask, Don't tell"?
Your Buddy Koyla seems to be the only angry sicko here. Why is that?
CowGirl in the Sand....One of the great Neil Young songs of all time!!!

I would really have no idea about animals. I would assume not. And of the gay people I have known, which is quite a few, I believe that some of them chose/wanted to be that way, and I believe some were born that way. I am 100% convinced of both situations ( that some are born that way and some choose it ) in people at least.
And no im not a homophobe or anything like that, im at work, I have a gay coworker sitting not 12 feet from me and I asked him about the question and he agrees.

I found most of these answers to be very startling and funny. People are much more ignorant than I can actually give credit for.
Sexuality is predetermined because it has a biological basis unlike the other choices a person makes in her/his life. No one that I've talked to "choosed" to be gay. In fact, if you were to ask them what "preference" they would like to have as a lifestyle, most if not all will tell you that they would want to be straight.
Try taking a simple test. Go to a movie, imagine yourself to lust after the same gender, you will find that your efforts would be fruitless.

I don't agree that your reasoning proves that Human's cannot choose to be gay. How do you know animals can't choose to be gay as well?
You didn't mention the fact that people can and do choose to be gay all the time. It is only some of them that claim they didn't "choose" to be that way.
To the guy below me, wow, you have really shown your superior intelligence to us. I'm sure you will get plenty of people to agree that homosexuality is predetermined with those remarks.
Heart and troll, good point I have been wondering that too. If homosexuality was purely genetic it would have died off a long time ago because by the very nature of homosexuality it leads to no reproduction.
That is one reason I believe it is mostly a choice and just partially predetermined.

First of all Humans are not animals. I know liberals want to put us on the same level but we are not.
Second of all yes humans choose to be gay. As for animals I wouldn't know. I can't tell you why a dog would try to hump a person's leg. I don't get it myself.
Thirdly, if you want to go in this same direction you would also have to believe that pedophiles don't choose to be pedophiles. If homosexuality is natural then so is pedophilia. I myself believe they are both perverse and disgusting.

Nothing about this question is actually political. Except that Liberals want to pollute politics with their religious and scientific views.
It's a fallen earth. If you can't wrap your mind around that precept, you wouldn't believe anything else I said, either.
The fact is, societies have mores. It is for the sake of continuation of society that these mores exist. Marriage is for the inherent benefit of women and children, and protects them from the more er... animal tendencies of men.
