Paul O'Neil will not have his number retired by the Yankees. He was a very good player for them, but not an elite enough player to get his number retired. They may hold off on issuing his number for an extended period of time, but he's not going into Monument Park.

Bernie Williams, Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera. Those are three guys who will get their numbers retired. Those three will join these guys who have had their number retired:

1 Billy Martin
3 Babe Ruth
4 Lou Gehrig
5 Joe DiMaggio
7 Mickey Mantle
8 Bill Dickey
8 Yogi Berra
9 Roger Maris
10 Phil Rizzuto
15 Thurman Munson
16 Whitey Ford
23 Don Mattingly
32 Elston Howard
37 Casey Stengel
42 Jackie Robinson
44 Reggie Jackson
49 Ron Guidry

Which one of these guys doesn't deserve to have his number retired?

The Cardinals retired Ken Boyer's number. How can you fault the Yankees for the guys they retired if the Cards retired that number?

in case you retire Paul O'Neill's type (you have already retired the spelling, I see), then you definitely won't have any numbers left for Yankees to apply considering that there are a minimum of a hundred extra Yankees whose numbers are extra worth of having their type retired than O'Neill is of having his retired. What courting O'Neill's type and Adam Graves' type have is a little extra mystical than I care to challenge after.

Soon the Yansk will be in the
Alphabet with players
They overrate the retiremns

Check the other teams.
Yes Babe Ruth, L. Gerrigh.Micky Mantle
But some 2nd baseman who shows up for work
Sorry //////////// not the way to end a career.

Look at the Mets., pHILS, Dodgers and see legacy on greats.
St. Louis sorry late on that team

Not sure if they will retire his number, but if they do, I suspect it will be when/if he enters the HOF.
