Zippernose is correct. After the league changed the rule on free throws to prevent Wilt from stuffing the ball from the free throw line, he tried many things and used the underhand most of the time.

Brent Barry did when he first played in the league. Chamberlain did for a little while too but not with much success. Harold Levitt is the guy who started it, at one time making 499(and 871out of 872 in 7.5 hours) in a row while playing with the Globetrotters(not NBA).....he is the one who taught Rick Barry.
