How do you tow a car with a broken tie rod if the wheel is kind of dangling?

The problem is that he is face first in a parking space- so the front tires are basically inaccessible. What then?

You don't.
Call a flat bed tow truck.

(rear wheel drive)?

the tire rod is part of the steering, so pull from the rear, but wire up the tire rod so it will not drag on the ground. Go slow and do not go on freeway. Should get you to garage. but if any distance is involved call a professional tow service. Or could rent a tow dolly and put front on it and tie er down. Assuming front wheel drive if not then you need to do last suggestion but disconnect drive shaft if an automatic trans. For a manual put in neutral.

To remove and replace a tie rod end is not a big deal, to save yourself a bit of money, when you unwind the old tie rod end out just count the number of turns and install the new one the same turns, this will save you on getting a wheel alignment.

As far as replacing it if it can be done safely where the car is sitting at the moment, replace it there and save yourself the cost of the tow truck.

Good Luck

It's impossible to say what the wheel would do because there are various factors involved such as if you're going around a curve, were the brakes applied when it broke, rain, etc. One thing however is for certain. If a tie rod breaks at 65 - 70 mph you risk serious injury or death to yourself and those in your car as well as anyone who may be traveling along side of you on the highway when it breaks.

Hoss up the front end. Not the rear. Just tell the tow-truck before it arrives, you need a wrecker, not a flatbed.

if your getting a tow truck, they will raise the front up and tow it on the back wheels.
