I have a Lincoln penny, dated 1974, with an odd inscription of someones face (looks like Kennedy) just to the right of the Lincoln bust, on the "heads" side of the penny. Anyone ever hear of this?

Yes, back in the late 1960's through the 1980's novelty cents were made. Presidents other than Lincoln were stamped to the right of Lincolns bust. There was one set that had a outline of each state put on a cent to the right of the bust. Lincoln also had a pipe put in as well as a cigar. There are others but no one seems to have done much research on it. They are interesting for they are a piece of Americana. I believe the designs may have been put on a punch and then stamped on the coin. The coin collecting community never accepted them other than they are a damaged coin. The fad died out in later years.
