Exactly what does the Mayan callendar predict to happen in the 2012 and why is it considered an apocalypse?

If the date referred to a calculation that predicted the conjunction of all the planets in the solar system, it has been done many times . It was predicted that when planets are in conjunction something would change on Earth.
So far observations have concluded a null.
Why an apocalypse =people in general ,experience unfounded fears.It has nothing to do with the Biblical apocalypse.

The year 2012 is nothing more dangerous than being the end of an ancient Mayan time cycle, sort of like an end to their current calendar. Some doomsayers, who can conjure up a catastrophe from the number of diapers a certain baby goes through in one day, have proclaimed that 2012 will be when the world ends.

Actually nothing is predicted, the calendar just runs out. But since it does run in very long cycles it probably is meant to start at the beginning again.

I don't know but we know there is a close call in 2029 and 2031 with an Asteroid, maybe the Mayans knew about it but got the year slighlty wrong (a strong possiblity) or they knew about something else.

The calendar runs out and they died before they did their next one. Actually the world ends the last day of March next year; that's when my Barnes & Noble dog calendar runs out.
