Apparently the first folk to visit the Americas were those who were later to be known as Native Americans. They came over from Asia, crossed a Land-Bridge that is now underwater, into Alaska and then down from there. The next visitors from the Atlantic side were the Vikings who island-hopped from Norway to Iceland to Greenland and onto what is now Canada. I think this happened about the time of 700AD to 1100AD. After that it was Columbus and the rest is history . . . . . .
Now for the rest. I once saw this TV Documentary which said that there was evidence suggesting that Native Auatralians were making a boat trip to some place and because of some major storm got very, very lost and ended up in South America. They settled and many years later, some new folk arrived, folk who would later become the Aztecs & all. Needless to say there was a bit of fighting and the future Aztecs won. You'll have to find more info about this yourself. It was many years ago I saw this TV Documentary and I lost track of source information.
Then there is a little Myth from the nation of Wales, UK. It's believed that a Welsh tribal leader known as "Mad Dog" got ideas of power and glory yet was unable to achieve them in Wales or in any other part of the UK. So he got on a boat with some friends and somehow found their way to America and met some of the locals. Some Centuries later, a few English scholors heard about this, wrote about it and tried to find evidence of it actually happening. They even went to America and spoke to the locals. Some of these English guys - and a few Welsh - claimed to find proof of the "Mad Dog" voyages but on closer inspection, there's nothing. Sorry.
With your question, be very careful about religion and stuff like "Jesus Is Alive", etc. These are matters of belief and not real "facts". Facts can be 100%-solid-proven whereas Belief can't be 100%-solid-proven. Any comments along this line, in my opinion, are usually made by militant athiests or militant believers each trying to "prove" they are right. Both groups really piss me off. I really get annoyed by millitant attitudes and the millitant attitudes of athiests and hard-core believers are always the worst.
As for me. What "fact" did I once believe but have since found to be false? That people are alone.
Humans are far too obssesed with the idea of Aliens and ET's. They think that as soon as Dr Spock and Jabba the Hutt land on Earth, all of the war, disease and other woes that plauge the Earth will dissapear by magic.
Well, Humans are not alone. You see, there are these things called "Other Humans". We see them all the time.
Instead of looking up, I believe we should all be looking sideways and at these other Humans. We should talk to and talk with each other instead of running away scared only to come back with a gun or two and shooting the place up.
As soon as we actually practice what we preach about a little thing called "tolerence" then, and only then, will the answers to our mutual problems go away.

When I was in grade school, they taught us that "birds" and "fish" were classified separate from "animals." To our teachers "animals" were apparently only four-footed creatures.
I was also taught that the US was the "greatest country in the world." It may be good for those who live there, but I don't believe it anymore. These days it's a frightening totalitarian regime unrecognized as such by those who live under it.
