Very well said babysham(bles). I respect your integrity and courage and the views you have brought to this debate. It makes a refreshing change from all the gratuitous insults and abuse which have passed for argument over the last few weeks. Hopefully the wind-up hate merchant class-warriors with their own spite- filled agendas are gone for good. My regret is that I was foolish enough to respond to their sick and personal taunts in kind. This and your previous post have contributed positively to the debate, and I respect you for that, whilst not necessarily endorsing all of your views.

I feel it is a matter of confidence,. Each society has a form of class system which can be defined by wealth and a subsystem which divides between old money and new money. This happens in one way or another even in egalitarian countries. In the USA it is money in UK it is often but not always bloodline.
The fact is you start where you start the very wealthy di have an easier time of it by way of education and contacts which go over a lifetime. The less wealthy have to build up contacts and break in to wealthy and influential circles in later life and so have to fight that bit harder. It makes them unpopular with the already wealthy who see you as a threat which must be suppressed. confidence is called cockiness ans standing your ground in even a polite way is called rudeness. You are you and you are no worse than anyone else and no better so the comments disparaging anyone in terms of class show only a lack of confidence, otherwise they would not need to make the comments so don't hate just pity because that is all that is deserved

We are comparing class because if Maddie's mother were from a poorer working class family she would have been criticised for leaving three children, under the age of 3 alone while her and her husband were sipping cocktails and eating in a 'nearby' restaurant.
If for example maddie's mother was a single parent, she would have slaughtered... And heaven help her if she was from an ethnic minority.
Simply because she is a Dr, the world envisages that she was the best mother in the world which she was clearly not even close to being. Her and her husband neglected those children, she should be charged with neglect and her other children taken away from her. How dare she parade around the country looking all mournful and sad pretending that she doesn't feel an ounce of guilt. The german reporter who asked her and her husband whether they were involved in Maddie's dissapearance was absolutely right to do so. It was a question on everyone's lips.
Somehow, the Mcanns are being protected from cricisim. Middle class people are child abusers too, Dr's can neglect children too... what is going on with that family???
I really hope Maddie is found safe and well, then she can be removed with her brother and sister to a safe home with people who will CARE for them and PROTECT them!!!!!

The English call it the class system, most of the rest of the world just call it snobbery. It is wrong, but it exists. It is all very shallow and meaningless - everyone should be able to live with whoever they wish, no matter from what religion, background, upbringing, etc. If society in general would just be happy with who they were and not judge others so quickly on their terms, then it would be a much happier world for sure.

I think the class thing is an issue in the maddie case due to the fact that if it had been a working class family that had left their children unattended rather than an upper/middle class family, the media and public response would have been far different. Realistically, the onus of blame would be far more on the parents if they were from "lower" social backgrounds - the other children would probably have been taken into care immediately for a start.

No, it doesn't bother me at all. I learned how to tune it out and I might have ADD (meaning it would be extremely difficult for me to tune something out). Occasionally it bothered me, but people would get to the point where they were yelling over the teacher. There were a few people who had parents that were very involved in the school, so they got away with anything. But no, none of that stuff really bothers me. It's not that hard to tune it out.

Hi Babysham,
Don't let it bug you. Class doesn't really exist anymore: there seem to be only 2 classes now - taxpayers and the underclass. The other aspect, I suppose, is that we live, to a large extent, in a meritocracy. Anyone can be anyone they want to be.
Class has been mentioned quite a bit on this forum in relation to the McCanns. Their supporters are constantly accusing those who do not support them as chavs etc and praise the McCanns for their perceived 'class'. Quite ridiculous, because they haven't a clue about us but they are obsessed. It's not difficult to guess why! Anyone who has been brought up well is not a snob, unlike some I can mention. You have a profession, which is more than they probably have.

Why take it to heart? Just because a person has money it doesn't make them a good person. Take Britney Spears or Paris Hilton. Are these people you aspire to be? Or would you rather be a good worker who finishes life knowing that you tried hard and achieved something? It's up to you how you view life.

Basically it is because people perceive that the McCanns have got away with child neglect because of their class and people think that if they had been working class they would have been treated very differently by the police, media etc etc and wouldn't have got away with it!

I think its because people who support them have no way to justify their opinions so instead they decide to accuse everyone who doesn't think the mccanns are saints of discriminating against them because they are middle class.
The best one was being told I was just jealous of their wealth, thats why I criticise them. Ha!

Everyone to themselves. There will always be a class thing and for you to post a question, it must bother you - even slightly?
I attended a public school until 7, then a state school living on a council estate until 11, next a luxury cottage until I was 18, so what? This was my parents life - not mine. My life is now - I am an adult.
