Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a group of physical, emotional and behavioral symptoms that commonly occur in the two weeks prior to menstruation. It is common among women of childbearing age and symptoms usually recur in a predictable pattern. Some women experience symptoms so severe that they interfere with daily activities. These women have a condition known as premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), which is diagnosed under specific criteria established by medical authorities. Though the symptoms are similar, PMDD is considered a separate disorder from PMS.

PMS - Pre-Menstrual Syndrome. There are women who experience symptoms about a week before their period is due, due to the changing hormones. Symptoms like bloating, lowered energy, abdominal pain and cramping, and mood swings - often involving anger, tears, inability to cope. These usually go away in the first few days of the period. In some women it is so severe that it interferes with the way they live their lives.
There are medicines available at the chemist which can help to reduce the severity of the symptoms. Evening Primrose Oil Capsules from supermarkets and Health Food Shops is reputed to do the same. And some women find that going onto the Contraceptive pill also helps, as the pill delivers regulated amounts of hormones.
