Like Machiaveli said in his paper the prince, A prince must do what ever it takes to stay in power albeit without over abusing his people. He said it in different words but thats the main idea.

A politician will do the same. Politicians will do whatever will keep them in power. Some times this benefit us and sometimes it doesn't Sometimes they have good intentions but must do things that are not as agreeable.

To answer you question then the answer is sometimes. Their first priority is to keep in power which means they will lie, steal and or abuse if they need to.

Ron Paul seems pretty honest...look how he answered the question about 9/11 in the first debate...although I don't agree with his assessment of why Al Quida struck the towers I do give him credit for standing on his beliefs...I think allot of Politicians simply pander to whatever audience they have...Ron Paul stood in front of the whole Nation on a Republican stage and gave his opinion without regard to how unpopular his view is with Republicans...that is the kind of leader I want.

There's some. You'll know it when the candidate or incumbent is receiving massive incoming fire from angry constituents when supporting an unpopular cause...and then sticking to his or her guns.
