It's tough to gain the respect of elders when you are as young as you are. In my business (I'm older), I have no issues with respect of elders, since they are reasonable close to my age. And, oddly enough, most of my clients are YOUR age.

They tend to look at me like 'their father', and seem to entrust me because I've been around.

I would recommend starting working with clients your own age who are buying, doing the best job you can, and then working for referrals from this group. Remember, all of them have parents, and, if you do a good job, a reference from one of the kids is invaluable.

Good luck !

DJ B and acermill answered your question beautifully. But I would like to add that success also comes from your state of mind and the way you carry yourself, dress and who you associate with. Invest in a few good quality suits and dress clothes so you always look professional and put together. Look people in the eye, have a firm handshake and genuine smile. Don't get caught up in office drama and gossip. (That one alone can be a reputation-killer!) And be sure that the company you choose has a top notch training program and easy access to the broker.

Hope these tips help and good luck on your new endeavor!

What you might consider doing is shadowing a Realtor for a week to see what their world is like on a daily basis. There is no set guidelines for what it takes to succeed, except work smart, not hard and be honest, upfront and go the extra mile to assist your customer.

But in the meantime, you may want to consider a fallback career, so stay in school and get a degree.
