It depends on what you consider "the big cats" to include. Many scientists argue it should include only the animals in the genus Panthera, which are the only large cats that are able to roar. This traditional definition includes the lion, tiger, leopard, and jaguar.

Other definitions would include the cheetah, snow leopard, clouded leopard, Bornean clouded leopard, and cougar as well.

It depends on what you consider a "big cat".

Overall there are a total of 36 species of wild cats, that however does not include subspecies. For example the 36 list includes "tigers" as one rather than 5 species that are still left today.

The list of 36 includes the following, next to them I placed what most consider them as. Please not I said "MOST" and that they are not official.

What you consider big cats are the four species in the family Panthera: They would be the tiger, lion, jaguar and the leopard.

Other species are sometimes called the big cats because of their size. They are the cougar, cheetah, the snow leopard, the clouded and the Bornean clouded leopard.
