Both Political Parties are rushing toward bigger and bigger government. Both parties are working hard to reduce the size of the middle class. (Just from different directions.)
Most Americans, regardless of their affiliations, recognize this fact.
They are NOT supporting candidates OR parties.
They want to be independent because they want to support candidates that aren't in the pockets of the big political contributors who have an agenda that is NOT in the best interests of the people.
I know this doesn't fully answer your question, but it will add perspective.

This is a polling company. It shows a decline in Republican voters and an increase in Democratic voters.

my own thoughts on the decline in party identification is that maybe it is a good sign that people are voting issues and not parties.

Who knows why bell-bottoms are in and then out again.

It is currently socially vogue to deny party affiliations, claim they are both "evil" and "corporate scions." Even though many saying these words are clueless regarding alternatives.

I blame ignorance and media indoctrination, generally.
