Solve for "x"... 2x^2+14x+20 = 0

First: factor - find the least common factor which, is 2

2(x^2+7x+10) = 0

SEc: factor x^2+7x+10 > multiply the 1st & 3rd term to get 10. find two numbers that give you 10 when multiplied & 7
(2nd term) when added/subtracted. the numbers are (2 & 5). rewrite the expression with the new middle terms.

x^2+2x+5x+10 = 0
(x^2+2x) + (5x+10) = 0
x(x+2) + 5(x+2) = 0
(x+2)(x+5) = 0

Third: solve the "x" variables - set both parenthesis to "0"

a. x+2 = 0 (subtract 2 from both sides - when you move a term to the opposite side, always use the opposite sign).

x + 2 - 2 = 0 - 2
x = - 2

b. x+5 = 0 (subtract 5 from both sides).
x + 5 - 5 = 0 - 5
x = -5

Solutions: -2, -5
