The easiest way to get what you need is to get a stain kit from the door manufacturer (if they offer one). If your door is from Therma-Tru or Masonite, I know that they both offer stain kits.

If not, you MUST use a gel (or heavy-bodied) stain to stain your door. If you don't, you will will be terribly frustrated when you start staining.

If you are staining other woodwork in your house or have stain for your woodwork. Do this: stain the fiberglass door using the wood stain, just as you would a piece of trim. Brush the stain on and lightly brush it to get an even coat. It will not look good at this point. Let it dry completely at least 24 hours. Then repeat the process. Do not over-brush as the second coat will now stick to the first coat that you let dry.If you brush too much you will start to lift the first coat that has dried and ruin the process. Let the second coat dry thoroughly, then varnish with whatever you want.

I purchased one several months and was advised that the best way to stain it would be to use a stain gel and apply it in the conventional manner.

Get the gel stain kit, if available. check the manufacturer recommendations. The best results are obtained following manufacturer directions. They have tested the product extensively prior to releasing it to the buying public.
