If you are using XP and you are using DHCP you can set an preferred / alternative IP address, if that is what you are talking about than you can set it in the TCP/IP properties, the click the Alternative Address. You can set it there.

How are you configured?

If you have a dynamic IP address and connect directly to the modem, you should set the connection to obtain IP address automatically and to obtain DNS address automatically.

If you are connecting to a static ip address you need the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, DNS 1 and DNS 2 from your ISP.
